How to take High-Quality HDR Screen Shots on Windows 11

Stop looking at washed out, grey screenshots. Learn how to capture the true colors of HDR monitors.

If you have an HDR monitor, standard screenshots can often look “washed out” or overly white. Here is the fix.

1. Use the Xbox Game Bar

The Xbox Game Bar is the ONLY built-in Windows tool that officially supports HDR screenshots.

  • Press Win + G.
  • Click the Camera icon to save a high-bitrate capture.

2. Convert JXR to PNG

Game Bar saves HDR shots as .jxr files. To share them easily:

  • Use the WCG Image Converter found in the Windows Store.
  • This will map the bright HDR colors back to standard SDR so they look right on normal screens.

3. Check your Calibration

Ensure you are using the Windows HDR Calibration tool to set your monitor’s peak brightness. This makes the OS know exactly how to render the colors it’s capturing.
