High-Res Tips: Retina Display Screen Shots on Mac
Why are my Mac screenshots so huge? Learn how to handle the double-resolution files of Retina displays.
Retina displays have twice the pixels. This makes screenshots look great but also makes them physically 2x larger than they appear.
1. The Resolution Issue
A screenshot that appears to be 500 pixels wide is actually 1000 pixels wide on a Retina Mac. If you upload this to a website, it might look blurry or too big.
2. Using “Export for Web”
Before uploading, open your screenshot in Preview, select Tools > Adjust Size, and ensure the resolution is set to 72 pixels/inch if you want it to appear at a standard “1x” size on the web.
3. The Downscale Trick
Tools like Shottr can be set to “Downscale 2x screenshots automatically,” which is a huge time-saver for developers and designers.
