Master Mac Screen Shot Annotation Tools

Learn how to draw arrows, highlight text, and add your signature to your screen captures without opening Photoshop.

Mac has some of the best built-in image markup tools in the world. You don’t need third-party apps to explain your screenshots.

1. The Markup Toolbar

After taking a screenshot, click the floating thumbnail (or spacebar a file on your desktop) and click the Pen icon.

2. Essential Tools

  • Shapes: Click the Square/Circle icon. Pro Tip: Use the “Loupe” (magnifying glass) to highlight a specific detail.
  • Text: Click the ‘T’ to add comments.
  • Signature: You can use your trackpad to write your signature and drop it onto a document screenshot.

3. Highlighting

Select the highlighter tool from the brush menu. It’s pressure-sensitive on newer MacBook trackpads, allowing you to control the thickness of the line.
